My Ashiatsu Journey to Wellness
Author: Anthony Federico
It was 2011 and I was half way through massage school; I was t-boned at in intersection in Seattle, WA. I was lucky enough not to sustain any serious life threatening injuries, but my hips and lower back were in excruciating pain.
Over the next few years, the pain slowly got better, but I still suffered from a considerable amount of daily constant pain. The muscles and fascia in my lower back over the years became so adhered and tight that no matter how much I got it worked out, the muscles would just go back to being tight again the next day.
I had heard about Ashiatsu, but I never really knew how effective it was for lower back pain. After my partner and I trained in Portland, OR on how to do Ashiatsu, we began practicing on each other, shortly after I started seeing some significant changes and after a month of consistent Ashiatsu sessions, I was in the least amount of pain I had been in in eight years.
What is Ashiatsu?
Ashiatsu is using the entire body weight and massaging with the feet. It’s a myofascial style of body work that is extremely slow and deep.
Because of the broad surface of the feet, it doesn’t feel like a pointy elbow, so you aren’t left sore the next day like you would be from a regular deep tissue session.
There is something really amazing about pressure delivered on the back from directly above the body. We are able to work from the sacrum up to the shoulders with deep pressure on both sides of the spine that elongate the muscles and release the thick fascia in the lower back. Horizontal pressure is delivered across the hips to help balance the hips and correct pelvic tilts. Downward pressure around the hips and down the hamstrings and IT band help finish releasing the lower back.
This is deep effective work that when done on a regular basis will make significant changes to posture and structurally align the body to its normal state.
It is work that will continue to show you results weeks after treatment.
If you suffer from:
- Chronic lower back pain
- Hip pain
- Leg pain
…this is something you should try.
It has made a huge difference in my quality of life by getting rid of my constant pain and tightness in my hips and lower back.
I recommend weekly sessions for 2 months to have the greatest impact on releasing stuck fascia and chronic muscle tightness.
